Menacing Mosquitoes
Â
If thereâ € ™ s an insect that is always in the news, which is the humble mosquito. In 1933, This error was responsible for the epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (sleeping sickness) in the United States.
Today, mosquitoes are threatening the man in many ways. Two of the diseases they cause - malaria and dengue fever - affecting more than 80 countries.
There are 160 different species of mosquitoes in the United States, but not all of them bite. Only the female of the species made from eggs that require the blood carries. These eggs are usually laid in water and hatch in a few days.
Adult mosquitoes are three to five millimeters long, have a pair of wings, and live 10 to 14 days or months. They live longer in cold weather.
Worldwide, the three types of mosquitoes that often cause problems are the Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus. Picking up germs spread disease from infected animals or people and bring these to the other provided that suck blood.
"Breeds Anopheles fresh and water pollution, especially at the edges of ponds and streams, in pools, containers full of water and puddles. aegypti breed in water holding nothing clean or dirty. This includes vases, trays animal drinking, old tires, and other places where water is trapped. Culex breeds in polluted water and drains, latrines, and sometimes in the rain water collected in gutters, "said the editors of â € € œHealth Alert, a publication of Health Information Action Network.
Mosquitoes have different habits of biting. The Anopheles and Culex are nocturnal creatures and bite only at night. Aedes is a day-biting species is active two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset.
Regardless of the species that bites you, mosquitoes are a threat to health. Here are some of the diseases they cause, symptoms and complications.
Malaria remains a problem in 82 countries, despite the efforts of the World Health for disease control. Every 30 seconds, one person dies of malaria and more than 100 million people or 40 percent of the world's population contract the disease each year. There are 1,000 new cases each year in America alone.
In the old days, people thought malaria was caused by bad air that is how the disease has a name. We now know that mosquitoes are the culprits. They carry the spores of the malaria parasite Plasmodium in saliva and transfer this to the they bite people.
Once inside the victim's body, the spore to the liver and plays in the red blood cells. After a while, the infected cells burst, scattering new malaria parasites that attack other cells.
There are four types of malaria, depending on species Plasmodium that infects a person. They cause headaches, limb pain, sweating and chills, lasting 15 minutes to an hour. These Symptoms begin anywhere from eight days to eight months after the bite of the victim.
The most serious is malaria P. falciparum, or cerebral malaria can be fatal if treatment is delayed or inadequate. In this type, the parasites infect the brain and nervous system and can cause sudden death. (Next: More diseases mosquitoes.)
